A study conducted in Germany at the University of Ulm has shown that antioxidant vitamins help to preserve cognitive function. Gabriele Nagel researchers and colleagues studied a group of 74 men and women, between the ages of 65 and 90 years of age, with mild dementia. This sample was compared with a group of 158 control subjects matched for age through Neuropsychological testing, evaluation of lifestyle, analysis of vitamins in the blood and calculate body mass for each patient. The concentration of vitamin C and beta carotene in the serum of patients suffering from dementia, was significantly lower than in the control subjects. This difference between the two groups was not, however, it
observed for the other antioxidants (vitamin E, lycopene, coenzyme Q10). Vitamin C found in citrus fruits and beta-carotene in carrots, apricots and spinach could thus prevent the onset and development of diseases such as Alzheimer's according to Nagel. However, an additional longitudinal studies with different samples and more extensive to confirm this result, already in itself very positive.
